How to store bulbs

Use this handy gardening trick to store your flowering bulbs until it's the right time to plant them

Planting bulbs is a fantastic way to get a burst of colour in the garden. From tulips to hyacinths to freesias, there is a massive range of bulbs to suit any climate.

While some bulbs can remain in the ground once they have finished flowering, others need to be dug up and stored until they are ready to be planted the following year.

An egg carton is a fantastic way to store bulbs, as it keeps them protected, allows airflow and prevents excess moisture buildup. You can also write the names of bulbs on the carton to help you remember which ones are which.

When digging up bulbs, lay them on a sheet of newspaper for 24 hours to dry out first. Trim back any roots and pull any outer layers that are flaking off, then place them in the egg carton and store in a cool dry place.
