An old paved patio off the back of this home had recently been replaced with a new deck as part of a plan to overhaul the yard.
To turn the deck into a year-round outdoor living and entertaining space a pergola was installed and roofed with corrugated polycarbonate sheets to let in the maximum amount of light.
Garden beds were built around the deck using ACQ treated pine sleepers, which are safe to use for everything from vegie patches to playgrounds.
The same 2.4m long sleepers were used to build a new retaining wall beyond the garden beds. It was designed to provide more structure to the sloping site and mark a clear division between the deck and the lawn.
