Handyman reader Craig Johnson and his wife wanted their children to have a play area in the backyard, so they decided to give up the struggling rose garden to make space.
After removing the fence and digging up the flowers, the couple marked out their plans, which included a sandpit.
The area was levelled, trenches were dug and limestone blocks laid for the walls and sandpit.
Craig hired a compactor and prepared the crushed rock base before laying artificial turf, then lining and filling the pit with sand.
In the back corner of the yard, the couple laid 500mm pavers and covered them with rubber mats to create a safe base for the trampoline.
The playground was finished off with a cubbyhouse, which took nearly a day to assemble.
Craig says that the space is a huge success with the children.
‘They love their new area, and it is easy to sit under the pergola next to it and watch them play.’
