There’s always something incredibly satisfying when you mix up your space, bringing a little extra personality to your home. An excellent way to show you and your family’s personality is through your choice of art and how you present it around the home.

As an art gallery director, it is a large part of my role to help my clients find the perfect piece to brighten their homes and offer some cool and quirky styling tips along the way. So, if you’re looking for new ways to showcase your art, besides the obvious wall hang, I’ve shared my best advice below:

Savvy decorators value a sense of consistency, which is achieved by positioning art within a considered configuration. It can be attractive to the eye to arrange an odd number of objects symmetrically for an ordered, finished look.

Try hanging similar-sized artworks side-by-side at uneven heights with uniformed distances between. The finished look will seem effortlessly coordinated while also giving more structure to the space.

When doing this, remember that odd numbers will strangely feel more harmonious. Groups of three always create a sleek and sophisticated feel!

Use your art and architecture to your advantage

Modern, contemporary, open-plan homes can sometimes make a house feel more like a hotel than a home. If you’re looking for ways to avoid this, art is an incredible way to bring a depth of warmth to your home.

A trend we see a lot is the mix and match gallery wall. To master this form of styling, why not try a few unique alternatives that will highlight the contemporary architectural aspects of your house and offer a window of personality that’s guaranteed to transform the space.

A great place to start with a mixed gallery wall is to look at where the whitest space in your home is. A large wall may be calling for an oversized landscape piece or a unique series of still lifes to provide a different mood to the layout.

In terms of styling, my advice would be not to be afraid to be eclectic and to mix it up with mediums, sizes and frames. Nothing shows the varied aspects of your personality better than a busy and entirely YOU gallery wall.

Spruce up the staircase!

Staircases can be challenging to style but also offer a great deal of potential. For example, the high ceilings and white spaces surrounding a staircase can be elevated with one or two large abstract pieces. Abstracts are a great option in this space as they can be appreciated regardless of the height and distance, so you can select your art based on colour, light, and composition instead of the subject.

It’s also worth considering staggering your art up the wall to echo the configuration of the steps. Again, remember to stick to odd numbers where possible, using three, five, or seven pieces lined up in a way that mirrors the stairs; by doing this, you can create an attractive pattern that is easy on the eye!

Sculpture the space

Sculpture is a different medium that can sometimes be forgotten but can easily be positioned around the staircase, house entrance, or hallway to add a unique and welcoming feature. Perfect for smaller spaces, sculpture can immediately change the mood of the space.

Perhaps you’re not a plant person but have empty areas around the house that you know need styling? A sculpture can break up a room, and if positioned in the correct light, can become a signature feature that can establish the look and feel for the rest of the home.

Another favourite way to approach hanging is to find two artworks that work especially well together and hang them symmetrically on either side of a doorway. These artworks need a sense of cohesion to achieve the best result. They could be linked by style (possibly created by the same artist), matching frames, or even just share a similar colour palette or subject matter.

I especially love this tip in a high traffic spot such as an entranceway or at the end of a frequented hallway. If you can find two artworks that work especially well together, try hanging them symmetrically on either side of a doorway. The artworks will need a sense of cohesion to achieve a quality result. Look for paintings linked by style, matching frames, or art that shares the same colour palette or subject.
