build a deck - posts
In this DIY Video, we explain how to install posts to support a deck.
The posts are the most important part of the deck as they support the structure of the deck.
Posts are attached to post supports which can be concreted into the footing or attached to the top of the footing.
The posts support the bearer, which supports the joists, which in turn supports the boards.
It’s important to ensure that the posts are aligned to each other and are also level.
You’ll need to cut a housing in the posts to house the bearers. The housing will be equivalent to the size of the bearer. Mark the housing, then make a series of cuts with a circular saw set to the correct depth. Cut out the waste with a hammer and chisel. Use a smoothing plane to get a flat surface for the bearer. Any cut surfaces will need to be sealed.
