Outdoor sofa made of blocks

Handyman magazine reader Martine Grant built a stone-look seat in her yard.

‘I made a rough model then researched materials, opting for light, easy-to-cut Hebel blocks that I laid directly on a concrete slab I poured myself,’ says Martine.

When the basic shape was done she carved the arms and back using a handsaw and an angle grinder.

‘Carving the flowers was tricky but I’m pleased with the result. The design echoes three flowers on a wall of the house that can be seen from the sofa.’

Martine plastered the sofa and left it to cure then applied two coats of textured outdoor paint. For the mosaic she attached glass and ceramic pieces using construction adhesive.
