general purpose saw

General-purpose saw
The teeth have three bevelled sides, providing razor-sharp cutting and deep gullets (spaces between the teeth), making it easier to clear swarf away fast. Use for both crosscutting and ripping wood. Standard blade length 660mm Teeth per 25mm 9.
HINT If you're only going to buy one saw, this is the one.

plasterboard saw

Plasterboard saw
This saw has a sharp point, allowing plunge cuts to be made without first drilling a hole to accept the blade. Use for making cut-outs in plasterboard for electrical outlets. Standard blade length 150-240mm Teeth per 25mm 10
plywood saw Plywood saw
A fine-toothed saw blade with an extra set of teeth on the curved, upper edge of the blade. This allows a cut to be started on the inside of a sheet (away from the edge) without first drilling a starting hole. Use for reducing tearing on the outer plies of a plywood sheet. Standard blade length 280mm Teeth per 25mm 14
tenon saw Tenon saw
This is a crosscutting saw. The squared end and a stiffened rib along the back keep the blade rigid. Use for making joints especially
mitres and tenons. Standard blade length 200-355mm Teeth per 25mm 11-14
fretsaw Fretsaw
A deep-throated coping saw with extra-fine blade. Use for cutting intricate curves and making cuts further in from the edge of the stock than is possible with a normal coping saw. Standard blade length 150mm Teeth per 25mm 32.
HINT When installing a blade, fasten one end in the frame then press the frame against the edge of a workbench or table to bend the frame in slightly. Attach the other end of the blade to the frame then release the frame to put tension back on the blade and keep it taut.
bow saw Bow saw
A heavy-duty tool with a blade held under tension in a tubular steel frame, controlled with a quick-release lever. Use for cutting logs, coarse-sawing green wood, dry, seasoned wood or other building materials. Standard blade length varies Teeth per 25mm varies.
HINT The replaceable blades are made of pegged teeth and gullets to allow cutting in both directions.

veneer saw

Veneer saw
A small, double-edged tool with a narrow, curved blade used for precision work. The elevated handle makes it possible to cut flush with a surface. Use for cutting thin hardwood veneers. Standard blade length 75mm Teeth per 25mm 13
