Easy magazine rack

This magazine rack is simple to construct and can be made in under an hour.

1. Mark it out
Clamp the two boards together and mark out the the legs in pencil – these need to be 100mm wide and 200mm long. Mark one slot on the left outer edge of each board and one slot on the inside of the right leg of each board.

The slots should be 50mm long and 19mm wide. Decide on the shape and size of the decorative hole, then measure and mark it out.

2. Copy and cut
Cut out the basic leg shape with a jigsaw first, as this gives more room to cut out the fiddly inside edge. Carefully cut out the two slots, making sure they are exactly 19mm wide. This will prevent the rack from sagging.

To get into the tight corner with the jigsaw, first cut into one corner, then remove the blade. Work at a diagonal back into the same corner to cut out a small wedge. This will give you plenty of space to do a neat job.

3. Slot it together
Cut out the decorative hole by drilling a hole through both planks with a 16mm spade bit. This will give more than enough room to get the jigsaw blade in to cut out the shape.

Now, slot the two halves together. If your cutting has been accurate, the magazine rack should fit seamlessly, without any wobbling.
